The red panda, acrobat of the forests

The red panda is not a small cousin of the giant panda: it belongs to its own family, the Ailuridae. It is mainly found in the mountain forests of the Himalayas and southwestern China, where it climbs trees very well thanks to its semi-retractable claws.

Its diet consists mainly of bamboo, but it can also eat fruit, berries, eggs, or small insects. Its long, ringed tail serves as a counterbalance when it moves along branches and as a blanket when it rests in the cold. The white markings on its face also help to create beautiful contrasts in a drawing of a red panda.

How to color a red panda correctly

For a recognizable red panda, prepare a warm palette: orange-red for the back and head, mahogany brown for the paws and belly, cream for the cheeks, muzzle and eyebrows, then red and brown rings on the large tail.

  • Colour the fur with small, short strokes, in the direction of the body, to evoke its thick fur.
  • Add a slightly darker gradient to the legs and under the tail to give volume.
  • For a creative touch, draw some tender green bamboo leaves around it, or a snowy branch: the red panda lives in cool, leafy mountain forests.
